Luna’s Yum Yum Dim Sum

Author: Natasha Yim

Illustrator: Violet Kim

Publisher: Charlesbridge

I have been participating in MCBD Multicultural Children’s Book Day for the past two years and It’s been an amazing experience. It’s a great initiative to bring diverse voices to the foreground and celebrate all the amazing authors/creators out there and their stories. I was gifted the book  Luna’s Yum Yum Dim Sum by Natasha Yim to review.

I had read Natasha’s earlier book, Goldy Luck and the Three Pandas, and was looking forward to this one. I was not disappointed! Natasha does an amazing job with the storytelling while cleverly incorporating math concepts for young kids.

Luna is enjoying a special birthday lunch with her family. When she accidentally drops one dim sum, the three siblings have to share five dim sums among three of them. They start with one and then try to keep dividing the rest. At some point they realize that the portions have become too small. For educators, this is a great resource to talk about division and fractions. The illustrations are fun and lively. I especially enjoyed the ones in which the three siblings talk about their zodiac signs. This book is an opportunity to learn about Chinese culture in a relatable way. The back matter is rich and descriptive and will serve as a guide for parents and educators.
