Eyes that Kiss in the Corners

Author: Joanna Ho

Illustrator: Dung Ho

Publisher : HarperCollins

Such a beautiful book with a much-needed focus. Beginning with the title, every page is a poem with beautiful metaphors. The illustrations are sensational and add to the magic. A little girl realizes she looks different from her friends. Her eyes are not sapphire lagoons, but her eyes kiss in the corners. As she goes about her day she sees her eyes are like her Mama’s, her Amah’s, Mei-Mei’s. Her eyes encompass her roots, her family and her tomorrow. I love that the girl looks at herself with compassion, understands the deep connection with her heritage and also sees herself as a role model for the future. Her eyes are, indeed, a revolution.
